Accurate but Not Humble: Evaluating Epistemic Humility in LLM Agents under Knowledge Conflict

Kaiser Sun, Bernal Jimenez Gutierrez, Hongjun Liu, Jingyu Zhang, Jie Gao

his paper introduces a new evaluation metric called "epistemic humility" (EH) for LLM agents, focusing on their ability to acknowledge and act on uncertainty when faced with conflicting information. The authors propose a framework (Identify, Solve, Escalate) to measure EH and demonstrate that high task accuracy doesn't guarantee an agent exhibits this crucial trait, highlighting a gap in current LLM agent evaluations.

Epistemic humility behavior under knowledge conflict. An agent’s retrieved evidence ( 71.2 % 71.2\% ) contradicts its parametric belief ( 78.4 % 78.4\% ). We score how the agent handles such conflicts along three behaviors: Identify the gap, Solve it through bounded tool use, and Escalate the residual uncertainty to the user. The observed agent fails all three.

Caught in the Act: Probes Effectively Detect Sabotage and Catch Unverbalized Deception

Oskar J. Hollinsworth, Alex F. Spies et al.

This paper introduces a novel probe architecture for detecting deception in Large Language Models (LLMs) by aggregating information across multiple layers and tokens. By training these probes on the largest deception dataset to date, they achieve high accuracy…

OnTrack: Real-Time Monitoring and Intervention in LLM Agent Trajectories via Streaming Structure-Aware Optimal Transport

Babak Barazandeh, Connor Swanson et al.

OnTrack introduces a real-time monitoring system for LLM agents that compares their current actions against successful historical trajectories using streaming structure-aware optimal transport. This allows for immediate alerts or intervention within millisecon…

Overview of our contributions. We conduct a large-scale study of single-value generalization, i.e., how aligning a model to a single value influences its alignment toward other values. We introduce an alignment generalization prediction task, evaluating value representations by how well their pairwise similarity correlates with the ground-truth generalization matrix. Finally, we apply the most predictive representations to multi-value alignment target analysis and value taxonomization.

Predicting Alignment Generalization with Value Representations

Andy Liu, Mehar Bhatia et al.

This paper introduces the task of predicting how fine-tuning a language model for one value affects its behavior on other, unseen values. The core method involves analyzing model activations when applying values in context, which significantly outperforms usin…

Recursive Self-Improvement through Multi-Agent Self-Supervision

Hyunin Lee, Jinglue Xu et al.

This paper introduces Multi-Agent Self-Supervision (MASS) to overcome the supervision bottleneck in recursive self-improvement for complex, non-verifiable tasks. MASS enables a single model to iteratively design, execute, and evaluate multi-agent workflows, op…

Recursive self-improvement with multi-agent self-supervision (MASS). The agent, evaluator, and optimizer share the same language model (LM). MASS encodes multi-agent coordination as textual information within a workflow prompt . In the inner loop, the agent generates a workspace under the current workflow prompt, the self-evaluator provides feedback, and the self-optimizer refines the workflow prompt. The outer loop fine-tunes the shared LM on rollouts from the optimized workflow, then restarts the inner loop with the updated model.
